Top Honors/Scholarship for Vision Care Technology Students and Professor

Student Lisha Lambert and Professor Robert J. Russo

The New York State Society of Opticians (NYSSO) recently recognized several City Tech ophthalmic dispensing students and a faculty member for their research, scholarship and advancement of education in the field.

Student Lisha Lambert took first place in the competition for her research on contact lens-induced dry eye, while students Jin Cho and Latifat Subuloye took second and third places, respectively, for their research on fusarium keratitis (an inflammation of the cornea) and orthokeratology (a procedure for reshaping the cornea with contact lenses). Receiving honorable mention in the competition was student Constantine Vorillas for his research on extended wear complications.

Student Bolaji James was named recipient of the 2007 New York State Society of Opticians Scholarship. James, a 2006 recipient of the coveted Kaplan Scholarship, earlier had distinguished himself in the field by winning the National Federation of Opticianry Schools College Bowl held at the International Vision Expo at Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan in March of this year.

Modeled on the popular television game show “Jeopardy,” the bowl featured questions in the anatomy and physiology of the eye, ophthalmic dispensing and fabrication, contact lens and optics. James beat out student contestants from nine U.S. states and British Columbia.

Professor Robert J. Russo, chair of City Tech’s Department of Vision Care Technology since 2003, received a Certificate of Commendation from NYSSO in recognition of his 25 years of advancing opticianry education. Russo joined the faculty in 1976 and has been teaching full time for 30 years.
