Barbara Grumet Named Dean of Professional Studies
New York City College of Technology/CUNY (City Tech) has appointed Barbara R. Grumet dean of the School of Professional Studies, effective July 30, 2007. She reports directly to Provost Bonne August and is a member of President Russell K. Hotzler's cabinet. Grumet -- an attorney and longtime college administrator with expertise in healthcare law, accreditation, nursing workforce and healthcare education issues -- most recently served for more than four years as executive director of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. In that capacity, she was responsible for overseeing the accreditating process for more than 1,300 nursing education programs throughout the U.S.

Prior to this, she was associate provost of the Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University (1998-2001) where she was the chief administrative and academic officer responsible for the branch campus' programs in health sciences, education, business administration, public administration, counseling and psychology.
Grumet previously held the position of dean of the Sage Graduate School in Troy, New York (1992-98), where, since 1980 she held a faculty appointment in the department of political science and public administration and for part of the time served as department chair.
"We are pleased to welcome such a seasoned academician and administrator as Barbara R. Grumet to our team," said August, in announcing the appointment. "With her expertise in accreditation and governance matters, demonstrated leadership in effecting positive change at every institution with which she's been affiliated, and her record of scholarly accomplishments, she will ably guide the School of Professional Studies and its 11 departments."
At City Tech, Grumet will oversee the largest of the college's three schools, in terms of enrollment. More than 5,900 full- and part-time students are working towards associate or bachelor's degrees in such high-demand professional fields as business, health services administration, law and paralegal studies, restorative dentistry, career and technology teacher education, hospitality management, nursing, vision care technology, dental hygiene, human services and radiologic technology and medical imaging.
"I am delighted to be joining City Tech; the College's energy and commitment to students have already impressed me," says Grumet. "The School of Professional Studies currently offers many excellent courses of study, and there are lots of opportunities for expansion of existing programs and the development of new ones. I look forward to working with the faculty to continue meeting the needs of our students and employers in the metro New York area."
Grumet, who resides in Riverdale with her husband, Louis, the executive director of the New York State Society of CPAs, received her BA degree in speech from Denison University (Granville, OH) and a JD from New York University Law School. She was a research associate in law and psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and received a certificate in higher education management from Harvard University Graduate School of Education's Institute of Educational Management.
