City Tech’s LaShon Stockton and Safe Horizon Share Snapple’s ‘Best People in New York City Award’ During Women’s History Month
City Tech Department of Mathematics secretary LaShon Stockton and Safe Horizon were named co-recipients of Snapple’s “Best People in New York City Award” during Women’s History Month in March 2007. Safe Horizon is the nation’s leading victim assistance organization and serves more than 350,000 people each year whose lives have been marred by violence.
Stockton and her children, residents of the Stapleton section of Staten Island, were clients at Safe Horizon six years ago. “The encouragement and services we received from our caseworker,” says LaShon, “were more complete and compassion than anything I had hoped for and made all the difference between impending despair and the meaningful and productive lives my children and I live today.”
The encouraging words and emotional and other support that Stockton received inspired her to give back to others who needed help. Through organizing a holiday gift drive at the College of Staten Island and by volunteering at the Safe Horizon office, she is helping empower other women to find safety and solace in their lives. “LaShon is dependable and hard working and an asset to our program,” says a Safe Horizon case manager who has worked alongside Stockton, “and she has made a real difference in the lives of many of our clients.”
In addition to her employment at City Tech, Stockton currently is completing work toward a degree in social work through the CUNY BA Program and will graduate in June. She recently graduated from Safe Horizon’s Rape Survivor Advocate Program.
Whether responding to child abuse, domestic violence or other violent crimes, Safe Horizon helps victims and their families heal and rebuild their lives. Its services run the gamut from installing new apartment door locks and providing clients with food and shelter to other supportive services such as mental health counseling. Safe Horizon’s dedicated staff offers compassionate, expert support, helping victims find hope by offering a chance to tell their story in their own words, guidance through the criminal justice system and a safe place to sleep. Safe Horizon is woven into the fabric of New York City – in the courts and community and at the other end of a 24-hour telephone hotline.
