City Tech Establishes Construction Education & Safety Academy

It almost seems that there is construction happening on every block in the city, with yet another project announced every day. New schools, affordable housing, expansion of transportation hubs, redevelopment of commercial to residential space, relocating our local and favorite teams to new stadiums and, of course, the rebuilding at Ground Zero mean scaffolds, excavations and heavy equipment. New technology and safety are industry imperatives in this major New York employment sector.

The Division of Continuing Education at New York City College of Technology in Downtown Brooklyn is pleased to announce the new Academy for Construction Education & Safety (ACES). Designed for the development of professionals in construction and general industry, the academy, with its training partner, American Safety Consultants LLC, offers a broad range of safety and certificate programming, credentials recognized by the industry as well as certifications in response to new local laws. Courses are grouped for OSHA certifications but can also be taken individually for those with specific workforce needs and interests.

Targeting skills that increase compliance with regulatory standards, improve productivity and enhance employee participation in the health and safety process, Advanced Occupational Safety and Health Certification (AOSHC) provides a City Tech certificate of course completion as well as OSHA certification for two 30-hour Outreach programs, and an OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER program.

AOSHC seekers must select an additional 16-hour course from the following as an elective: Health and Safety Plan (HASP) Development, OSHA 7600 Disaster Site Worker, DOT and Highway Safety, Automotive and Fleet Safety Management and Fire Safety and Fire Systems. Participants will also receive the nationally recognized certification of Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) when they take the required prep courses and successfully pass the certification examinations. Students may be able to receive credit towards the AOSHC for OSHA courses they already hold, if proper documentation is provided, reviewed and approved by the continuing education board.

As new laws are passed and take affect, construction and other industries require compliance. City Tech has approval from the New York City Department of Buildings to offer three levels of Supported Scaffold Training for use of scaffolds with elevations of greater than 40 feet. Classes fulfill the intent of Local Law No. 52 and Article 10 of Subchapter 2 of Chapter 1 of Title 26 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York. The four-hour Supported Scaffold User Certificate, eight-hour refresher course and 32-hour Supported Scaffold Certificate of Completion are offered in both Spanish and English.
