City Tech Library Hosts Banned Books Exhibition

The Urusla C. Schwerin Library at New York City College of Technology is hosting an exhibition, “Freedom to Read,” daily, Monday through Saturday, through September 30, 2006, in the library showcase windows, 300 Jay Street (at Tillary), Atrium Building, 4th floor, Downtown Brooklyn. The exhibit is part of the annual nationwide observance of Banned Books Week.

This unique exhibition is a collection of the illustrative works of advertising design and graphic arts students in Professor Jenna Spevack’s vector art classes, and consists of reproductions of the original cover designs for prominent works of literature that have been banned or otherwise challenged at some point in time in venues worldwide. As part of a larger learning experience, the students selected books from the American Library Association’s list of banned books, read the books, researched the reasons for their banning, and recreated the original book covers using the computer application Illustrator. The resulting exhibition is intended to remind all members of the College community and other visitors to the display not to take the freedom of expression for granted.

Among the works of notable literature featured are Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Animal Farm, The Arabian Nights, Brave New World, The Call of the Wild, The Catcher in the Rye, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Color Purple, Frankenstein, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Lord of the Flies, Of Mice and Men, The Shining and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The annual observance of Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the American Library Association, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Association of College Stores. For additional information about the exhibit, contact Professor Spevack at 718.260.5221.
