NASA, Other Government Agencies, Major Academic Institutions Convene at City Tech for August 3 Urban University Research Summit

Brooklyn, NY -- July 13, 2006 -- Major science and technology academic organizations and government agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will gather in the Atrium Amphitheater at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of The City University of New York in Downtown Brooklyn on Thursday, August 3, 9:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., for the Urban University Research Summit.
The summit is the culmination of the activities of the 2006 New York City Research Initiative (NYCRI) Summer Research Institute, in which 16 teams of college and high school students and faculty have worked with graduate students and the principal investigators of NASA-funded research projects at 12 universities within a 50-mile radius of New York City. An additional six research teams have been assigned to NASA scientists at The Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in Manhattan.
Researchers from NASA, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and high school, undergraduate and graduate students, and science faculty members will participate in the day-long summit, which will include student research poster presentations.

Among the scheduled speakers at the summit are Mr. John Hairston, NASA acting assistant administrator for education; Dr. Robert Gabrys, NASA Goddard education officer; Dr. Vigador Teplitz, NASA Goddard director of university programs; and Dr. William Rossow, NASA GISS scientist and, as of September 1, 2006, a Distinguished Professor at The City College of New York (CCNY). City Tech President Russell K. Hotzler and Dean of the School of Technology and Design Robin Bargar will bring greetings.
In addition to City Tech, New York colleges participating in the summit include CCNY, Hunter, LaGuardia, Medgar Evers, Queensborough, The National Aviation Technology Center at Dowling College and The State University of New York at Stony Brook. New Jersey institutions represented are New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University. Rounding out the participating colleges is Southern Connecticut State University.
NYCRI partners include NASA GSFC/GISS (lead), NASA NY, NJ, CT and PA Space Grant Consortiums, NSF CUNY LSAMP, NYC Department of Education, NYS Department of Education, as well as The American Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium, Brookhaven National Laboratories, Wildlife Conservation Society, Liberty Science Center and Intrepid Air and Space Museum.
Previously, the Urban University Research Summit was held at Brookhaven National Laboratories on Long Island (2004) and Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey (2005).
