Free Basic Electronics Training for Women

New York City College of Technology’s Access for Women Program in Downtown Brooklyn is offering a free course in basic electronics for women interested in employment and careers in this growing field. The course is technical, combining classroom instruction with lab sessions, and teaches skills and theory applicable to entry-level employment as an electronics technician.

Hands-on activities will help students acquire the vocational skills needed to install, troubleshoot and maintain office equipment, cable television systems, industrial equipment and electronic equipment such as cellular phones, pagers, microwaves and AM/FM broadcasting equipment. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and strong math skills.

Classes will start in late March/early April and will be held on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. For complete information and registration dates for the 12-week course, please call Access for Women at 718.552.1131.

Established in 1984 by City Tech’s Division of Continuing Education, the Access for Women Program was created to assist women in gaining a foothold in the high-wage earning technical and construction fields. Recognizing the barriers to women’s participation in the skilled trades and professions that continue to exist, Access for Women has advanced equity over the years through a variety of strategies. These include a youth public education effort designed to promote awareness of non-traditional employment opportunities available to young women in high school as they begin to make choices about their futures, and a college preparation initiative that provides support to women enrolling in City Tech’s engineering technology degree programs. The Access for Women Program has played a significant role in creating an increasingly visible presence for women in technical and construction careers.
