President Hotzler Emphasizes Involvement in Public Affairs at Reception for Student Lobbyists
President Russell K. Hotzler honors student lobbyists at May 16 reception
The City Tech students who had volunteered their time and services to travel to Albany in spring 2005 to lobby legislators on behalf of the College were honored on May 16 at a reception and awards ceremony hosted by President Russell K. Hotzler.
In addition to meeting selected legislators, the students participated in activities sponsored by the Black/Puerto Rican Caucus and the Puerto Rican/Latino “Somos El Futuro” annual event held each year in the capital. Agustin Rivera, director of government relations, accompanied the students to Albany, where President Hotzler joined them.
“The College appreciates the articulate voice these students gave to the issues affecting all City Tech students, the needs of the College, and the importance of strengthening educational opportunity and access for all New Yorkers,” Hotzler said. “They were well prepared and we are pleased with how effectively they represented the College and its students.”
The students honored were Sharisse L. Austin, Pamela Drake, Robert Graham, Amauri Guillen, Sherard Harewood, Imogen Jones, Marucu Olivio, Jose A. Ortiz, Raul Quinio, James Richardson, Digna Rodriguez, Jolina Rodriguez and Christina Sanchez. President Hotzler presented each student with a black leather notebook emblazoned with the College seal.
In remarks during the ceremony, President Hotzler stressed the importance of learning beyond the classroom. “Students need to involve themselves in learning about the legislative process and the legislation impacting their lives,” he said. “They need to share this information with other students and to encourage all students to add their voices to the weight of public opinion that helps shape the policies and decisions made at all levels of government.”
