Students and faculty from City Tech’s Department of Dental Hygiene did their part again this year to foster dental health throughout Brooklyn during the American Dental Health Association-sponsored “Give Kids a Smile Day” on February 4. The department is an official site for this annual event.

Under the supervision of faculty members Dr. Nancy Ekelman and Annette Aluotto, RDH, and three volunteers from the Second District Dental Society, Drs. Reneida Reyes ’68 (a City Tech graduate), John Halikias and Juana Luster, students provided dental examinations, prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, toothbrushing instructions and referral for further professional dental health treatments to upwards of 50 Brooklyn youngsters. The day’s activities were coordinated by Professor Anty Lam and Dr. Stanley Steinerman.

Dental hygiene student volunteers also participated in an event sponsored by the Second District Dental Society and the New York State Dental Association at the Grand Army Plaza branch of the Brooklyn Public Library later in the month. One of the event activities involved the Child Safety and Identification Program (CHIP), an effort designed to assist local law enforcement officers in locating a lost or missing child through the Amber Alert System. The students were proud to participate in this effort, which was also coordinated by Professor Lam.

City Tech’s Department of Dental Hygiene operates a dental hygiene clinic throughout the academic year, offering a variety of free or low-cost dental hygiene services and a free sealant application program to City Tech students, faculty, alumni and community residents. For clinic hours and to make an appointment, call 718.260.5074.
