City Tech to Honor Legendary Photographer and
Art Directors Club ‘Hall of Famer’ Jay Maisel on May 11
The Department of Advertising Design & Graphic Arts (ADGA) at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will confer its 2005 “Grand Masters Award” on legendary photographer Jay Maisel on Wednesday, May 11, at 6 p.m., in an awards ceremony and talk at the Art Directors Club (ADC), 106 West 29th Street in Manhattan. Maisel’s presentation, “Perception, Light, Gesture and Color,” is being co-hosted by ADC. There is a $5 charge for the general public; it is free to ADC members and City Tech students and faculty with proper ID.
A native New Yorker born in Brooklyn, Maisel’s career spans 50 years. His name has become synonymous with vibrant color photography that uses light and gesture to create countless unforgettable images for advertising, editorial and corporate communications. In addition, his pictures appear in numerous publications and art collections. His many awards for excellence include induction into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, the American Society of Media Photographers’ “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the International Center of Photography’s “Infinity Award.”
His works have appeared in one-man shows and group exhibitions worldwide, and his books include A Tribute (A Callaway Book, 2001), a moving photographic testament to the power the World Trade Center had over the imagination not only of New York, but of the entire world. Other books include On Assignment: Photographs by Jay Maisel (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1990), Light on America (United Technologies Corporation, 1986) and The Most Beautiful Places in the World (Friendly Press, 1986).
A graduate of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and Yale University, Maisel continues his relationship with education by teaching younger photographers at workshops, seminars and lectures around the world.
“City Tech advertising and communication design students will have an opportunity to meet and learn from a master,” says Professor John McVicker, who is planning the event in collaboration with ADC Director Myrna Davis and Isabel Veguilla, the club’s educational coordinator. “The ADGA department at City Tech takes pride in the fact that it brings to campus and other venues some of the world’s most accomplished graphic designers, photographers, illustrators and other artists for the benefit of students.”
Past recipients of ADGA’s “Grand Masters Award” include award-winning advertising designers George Lois, the late Roy Grace, Seymour Chwast and Sal DeVito as well as City Tech alumnus and designer Walter Kaprielian. The Maisel event on May 11 is being widely promoted among ADGA’s 1,100 students and faculty and ADC’s 4,000 members.
