Former City Tech director of athletics and men’s basketball coach Ray Amalbert has been chosen to receive the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. The presentation will be made on April 20, during the 72nd NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards Dinner at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ.

Amalbert recently retired after guiding City Tech to a 22-6 record, the CUNYAC tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. A graduate of both City Tech and Hunter, with a master’s degree from Lehman, Amalbert is a former junior college All-American player in both basketball and baseball. He coached at City Tech before joining Hunter in 1988, where he went on to win five CUNYAC titles before returning to City Tech in 1999.

Overall, he compiled a 138-60 record in seven seasons at Hunter and a 222-200 NJCAA and NCAA mark in 16 seasons at City Tech for a 23-year career college coaching record of 360-260. As athletic director at City Tech from 1995 to 2004, he conceived and implemented the school’s transition from a junior college to a senior college member of the NCAA’s Division III in 1999.

Also to be honored is Cal Ramsey of New York University. Ramsey is one of the legendary figures in New York City hoops circles. He was an all-city high school player and later was named All-American at NYU. He broke 19 university records as a player, including the still-standing 34 rebounds in a game, and went on to play for the St. Louis Hawks, New York Knicks and Syracuse Nationals. He also was a Knicks TV announcer and served as chairman of the New York City Sports Commission.
