Gerard Albig Named Director of Athletics

Gerard (Jerry) Albig has been named director of athletics at New York City College of Technology (City Tech). He succeeds Raymond Amalbert, who retired in June 2004 after 34 years with the College, including the last nine as director of athletics.

Albig, who will be responsible for overseeing City Tech’s 10-sport NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics program, comes to City Tech from John Jay College of Criminal Justice/CUNY, where for two years he was the associate director of athletics and the sports information director.

In announcing his appointment, City Tech Dean of Students and Academic Services Lenore Gall said: “In June 2003, City Tech completed its four-year provisional membership in the NCAA, marking the completion of its transition from the junior college ranks to a full-fledged senior college Division III playing institution. A successful athletics program develops students’ communication, leadership and teamwork skills, which they take with them in all their future endeavors. I am confident that Jerry and his staff will guide and direct a program of which we can be proud.”

At John Jay, Albig was responsible for scheduling events for 11 varsity athletic teams, including many at off-campus venues. He also prepared contracts, arranged transportation, supervised home athletic contests, served as chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, researched academic and athletic eligibility of current and prospective student athletes, and arranged for officials for scheduled home contests.

In addition, his sports information duties included maintenance of the athletic department website and compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regulations.

Prior to John Jay, Albig worked in the front office of the New York Knicks, concentrating on basketball operations and player personnel. He assisted with logistics for the Knicks NBA Finals appearances in both 1994 and 1999.

“Jerry’s professionalism, hard work and attention to detail as it relates to the student-athlete will be of tremendous benefit to City Tech’s fledgling Division III program in the years to come,” says Zak Ivkovic, the executive director of the CUNY Athletic Conference.

Albig, a lifelong Long Island resident, earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and master’s degree in sports management from Adelphi University, where he was a member of the eighth-ranked Division I lacrosse team. While studying for his master’s degree, Albig was an assistant coach for the Division II National Champion Panthers’ lacrosse team.

Before enrolling at Adelphi, Albig was a member of the National Junior College championship lacrosse team at Nassau Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree in business administration. Raised in Franklin Square, he is married with two children and currently resides in Westbury.

“I’m honored to be given this opportunity by the City Tech administration,” says Albig. “Our mission is to bring City Tech to the forefront of the CUNY Athletic Conference. My past experiences at the professional and collegiate levels have prepared me for this new challenge.”
