Technical Writing is About More than Words
For Charles Hirsch, an adjunct instructor in the College’s Department of English, technical writing is about more than words. Hirsch coordinated a service learning project during spring semester 2004 in which students in his technical writing course worked with The Weeksville Society and the Community Environment Center to assist both organizations in meeting their respective missions by conducting related research and writing promotional materials for the two concerns.
The Weeksville Society is a preservation and museum organization. In
1838, James Weeks, a freed slave for whom the Society is named, purchased
land now located in Brooklyn’s 9th Ward. The area is an important
representation of the Post-Civil War era and African-American life at
that time. The Weeksville Society is working to reestablish this landmark
and conserve this important African-American community. In addition to
their other work, the City Tech students will help launch a newly designed
Weeksville Society website.
The Community Environmental Center is a non-profit organization looking
to expand its educational outreach activities in promoting healthier,
more efficient and more environmentally friendly living and working spaces
throughout the city. The center is staffed by trained professionals specializing
in community development, housing and other construction. The students’
work will assist the center in promoting the "greater greening"
of New York.
