30 High School Students Studied Robotics at City Tech
Two College Now students proudly show off their robotics project.
This past summer, 30 high school students participating in College Now at City Tech learned how to program a robotic arm to do common tasks such as paint a picture, type a website address and catapult a ball (as seen in the accompanying photo), while earning four college credits for completing two courses.
The technology course's instructor, Aparicio Carranza, a lecturer in City Tech's Department of Computer Engineering Technology, taught the students flowcharting and basic applications of physics.
In addition to learning design and problem-solving skills in a non-credit robotics workshop, the students, who came from all over the city, received a taste of what college is about by earning four college credits for completing two courses, "The Philosophy of Technology" and "Academic Access." In these classes, the students discussed ideas online via Blackboard and learned tips on time management, how to take notes and improve study skills.
College Now is a free program sponsored
by The City University of New York and the New York City Department
of Education that offers courses and services to give students a
head start in college while helping them do better in high school.
