City Tech Alumnus Among Honorees at 2004 Gamma Awards Dinner
Harvey Levinson ‘65, a City Tech graphic arts program graduate and head of the graphic communication department at California Polytechnic State University was one of two industry giants honored by Gamma Epsilon Tau at its annual Gamma Awards Dinner in May. Also honored was Scott Cornish of The New York Times.
This year’s Gamma Awards Dinner, a gathering of graphic arts supporters of City Tech’s graphic arts program, drew some 60 graphic arts professionals and students to pay tribute to two industry leaders with strong City Tech ties. The May 27 dinner was held by the school’s chapter of Gamma, the national graphic arts Greek organization, at La Maganette in Manhattan.
Gold Key Awards went to Dr. Levenson, one of the City Tech graphic arts program’s most successful alumni, and to Mr. Cornish, who long has been a private-industry champion of graphic arts internships for City Tech students.
In accepting the award, Levenson talked about the school that laid the groundwork for his career. “I was where you are right now,” he said to the City Tech students present, “and, yes, while I have five degrees, I remember the City Tech students and classes more vividly than those at any other institution.”
Levenson also described the importance of education in his upbringing. He touched on the advice of his father, who had not finished high school, who told him, “Do not give up an opportunity for an education. Society can take many things away from you, but the one thing no one can ever take is your education. It’s the one possession that will define you in life and death.”
Professors Joel Mason, chair of City Tech’s Department of Advertising Design & Graphic Arts, and Lloyd Carr, the department’s graphic arts program director, spoke glowingly of Levenson and Cornish during the award presentations. Levenson continues to generously support his alma mater in both material and other ways, and Cornish has enlisted the services of 20 City Tech student interns over the past six years. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to Xerox and Printing News in recognition of their ongoing support of City Tech and of the graphic arts industry as a whole.
