Dick Koral Honored by Enterprise Foundation
HI Director Dick Koral and Beth O'Larey, vice president for asset management in the New York office of Enterprise Social Investment Corporation, at "Super Super" recognition dinner.
Dick Koral, director of the Division of Continuing Education's Apartment House Institute at City Tech, was honored by The Enterprise Foundation and affiliated Enterprise Social Investment Corporation at the foundation's elegant "Super Super" recognition dinner on September 29 in the penthouse of The Times Square Hotel. The event celebrated maintenance staffs from numerous multi-family residential buildings citywide that Enterprise helped make possible. Koral is also co-founder and secretary-treasurer of the Superintendents Club of New York, the first professional society for New York City building superintendents and maintenance personnel.
In addition to Koral, who received recognition for his work in spearheading professional development opportunities for building maintenance personnel through a variety of college-level training programs, 26 supers were honored and 11 more were accorded special recognition. Those honored included Felipe Rodriguez, a leader in the Bronx chapter of the Supers Club at Hostos Community College. Attending the event was Peter Grech, Supers Club president.
The College's Apartment House Institute (AHI) and affiliated Supers Club continue to play an important role in the maintenance of the city's multi-family housing stock, including promoting the efficient use of energy in reducing oil and electrical power consumption. In collaboration with organizations that include The Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development, The Community Training & Resource Center, The Council of New York Cooperatives, The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and The Urban Housing Assistance Board, AHI offers a variety of training programs that include a course in energy-efficient building operations.
As fuel prices skyrocketed during winter and spring 2002, AHI helped organize and co-hosted an emergency oil conservation workshop held in Manhattan and attended by representatives of more than 100 New York City residential and commercial properties. Its Supers Club is composed primarily of multi-family building maintenance workers from 150 buildings citywide and its monthly newsletter, Super! is subscribed to by over 1,000 readers.
