City Tech Publication to Assist Students with Disabilities University-wide

Students with disabilities comprise one of CUNY and City Tech's most rapidly growing student populations. Now, thanks to Faith Fogelman, ACSW, director of the College's Office of Student Support Services, and her staff, students with disabilities will enormously benefit from the recent publication of Identifying Options. This 100-plus page comprehensive career-selection manual highlights every CUNY disability-friendly associate degree and certificate program, program curricula, colleges which offer these programs, prerequisite skills and abilities, potential jobs and other invaluable information.

Designed for use by students, advisement and student support services counselors, faculty, transition linkage coordinators, guidance counselors, vocational and rehabilitation counselors, employers and recruiters, other sections of Identifying Options list program accommodations for equalization and parity by disability, assistive technologies and related resources, and organizations with a history of hiring individuals with disabilities. The manual will be revised on a regular basis to reflect changes in curricula and other relevant data, and will soon be available in alternative formats such as tape and Braille.

Identifying Options springs from recognition on the part of Fogelman and staff that students with disabilities face unique career-selection issues and that a tool was needed to assist them in the career-track decision process. An early version of the publication came to the attention of Sylvia Walker, director of the School of Education Center for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies at Howard University. Walker, who is blind, attended City Tech during her undergraduate years before going on to earn degrees from Hunter College, Queens College and a doctorate from Columbia University. A recognized authority in the field of disability rights, she has devoted much of her career to developing ways to assist students with disabilities in pursuing higher education and succeeding in their studies. Through her Howard University program, Walker provided partial funding to produce and publish the latest version of this impressive manual.

Additional City Tech Office of Support Services professional and other staff instrumental in researching, writing and producing Identifying Options include Sudi Shayesteh, AMS, Charlotte Rubin, MSEd, and student assistants Jennifer Lusena, Helen Pero and Fitzgerald Stone.
