Charles A. Gargano, chairman of Empire State Development (ESD) and vice chairman of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, will speak on new job opportunities for New Yorkers stemming from the redevelopment of Ground Zero on Thursday, March 25, 2004, from 11 to 11:30 a.m., in New York City College of Technology's (City Tech) Klitgord Center Auditorium, 285 Jay Street (at Tillary), Downtown Brooklyn. The public is welcomed.

Gargano will deliver the keynote address at City Tech's 2004 Job Expo for graduating students and alumni. While the job recruitment phase of the day-long event will be restricted to City Tech alumni and graduating students, the Gargano presentation and a week-long series of workshops conducted by career development and job search professionals are open to all. For more information about the workshops, call 718.260.5006 after March 1.

"The redevelopment of Ground Zero will have an enormously positive impact on the New York City economy by providing extensive new employment opportunities, during both the design and construction phases and the operational decades that will follow," says Jerome H. Blue, City Tech's interim vice president for research, governmental and corporate relations. "The anticipated boom will touch all areas of the local and regional economy, from the commercial/financial sectors to travel and tourism."

City Tech students in all academic areas and graduates employed in a broad array of industries will likewise find the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan rich with additional job and career opportunities. Since its inception in 1946, the College has been helping build New York by producing well-trained professionals through its degree-granting programs in the architectural, civil engineering, construction management, electrical engineering, facilities management, mechanical engineering and environmental control technologies. It is also home to one of the most comprehensive, award-winning hospitality management programs in the nation. Moreover, its Division of Continuing Education has provided training for more than a quarter of a century to tens of thousands of working men and women through courses and workforce development programs in related areas. Many of these programs lead to certification and licensure in the building trades.

Chairman Gargano's presentation will provide City Tech students, alumni and other guests with an invaluable "heads up" on the job and career opportunities that will result from the redevelopment of Ground Zero. As ESD chairman, Gargano oversees New York State's economic development agency with co-headquarters in Albany and New York City and 18 branch offices around the state and worldwide. The agency's mission is to provide the highest level of assistance and service to businesses in order to encourage economic investment and prosperity throughout the state.
