Thirty-three students and seven faculty members from City Tech's Department of Dental Hygiene did their part to foster dental health throughout the Borough of Brooklyn on Friday, February 6, 2004, during National Children's Dental Health Month, sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA). Also helping out was City Tech alumna Dr. Reneida Reyes '68, a member of the 2nd District Dental Society and of the dental hygiene department's Academic Advisory Commission, who served as department liaison to the ADA.

Friday, February 6 was officially dubbed "Give Kids a Smile Day -- A National Event" by the ADA, and the College's Department of Dental Hygiene did its best to make that happen. Under the direction of faculty members Dr. Maureen Archer, Dr. Gwen Cohen-Brown, Dr. Nancy Ekelman, Dr. Stanley Steinerman, Annette Aluotto, RHD, Michelle Carr, RHD and Anty Lam, RHD, department students provided dental examinations, prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, tooth brushing instruction and other dental hygiene information to a total of 54 clients, referring 25 of them to dental health professionals for further treatment.

The following Sunday, faculty and students set up shop at the Grand Army Plaza branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and provided free examinations and referrals for another 70 youngsters and their parents. Dr. Steinerman and Prof. Lam served as activity coordinators for both events.

The Department of Dental Hygiene also operates a dental clinic throughout the school year, offering a variety of free or low-cost dental hygiene services to City Tech students, faculty, alumni and community residents. For clinic hours and to make an appointment, call 718.260.5074.
