Student Club Assists Brooklyn Botanic Garden During Cherry Blossom Festival
Members of the Japanese Association, a City Tech student club, volunteered their time and talent earlier this year to assist the Brooklyn Botanic Garden during its 2003 Cherry Blossom Festival.
Encouraging community service on the part of students, both voluntarily and as part of their academic experience, has long been an important component of City Tech's larger mission. So it came as no surprise when members of the College's student Japanese Association volunteered their time and talent earlier this year to assist the Brooklyn Botanic Garden during its annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
Japanese Association students helped greet guests at the garden's main entrance and information booth, served as interpreter/guides for non-English-speaking Japanese visitors, provided technical and other support for numerous festival performers, and assisted with various Japanese cultural demonstrations in Ikebana (flower arrangement), Origami, brush painting and calligraphy.
Established in 2002, the Japanese Association was originally formed to assist Japanese students at City Tech in succeeding at their studies and achieving their academic goals. But over time the club's mission has expanded to include a diversity of activities designed to promote Japanese culture, language and gastronomy among all members of the City Tech community. The club currently offers free lessons in Japanese language to interested students and faculty and is creating its own website to further serve its mission on an even larger scale.
