Sportsmanship Award for Men’s Basketball Team and Triple Honors for Yellow Jackets Center

The Yellow Jackets, New York City College of Technology men’s basketball team, has been named recipient of the 2004 Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award by the
New York Metropolitan College Basketball Officials Association (CBOA). The award will be presented at the association’s spring banquet on May 4, according to City Tech Sports Information Director Steven Kahn. CBOA is the largest college basketball officials organization in the world.

In related news, Yellow Jackets center Shacun Malave has been named to the d3hoops All-Atlantic Region First Team, the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star First Team and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association First Team. A technology teacher education major and junior, Malave resides in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx and is a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School.

At 6‘7”, Malave led the Yellow Jackets to a 16-12 record during the season just ended. In their first year of eligibility for NCAA post-season play, the team competed in the CUNYAC Men’s Basketball Championship finals, but lost to eventual champion Lehman College, following a quarterfinals win over Baruch College and a semi-finals victory over the College of Staten Island. The team also was selected to play in the ECAC Metropolitan NY-NJ playoffs, their first appearance in post-season play, where they lost to the eventual champion, Ramapo College.

Named City University of New York Athletic Conference “Player of the Year,” Malave was also named a “ECAC Player of the Week” as well as “CUNYAC Player of the Week” three times during the season. He scored 549 points this season in 28 games (19.6 points per game), had 299 rebounds (10.7 rebounds per game) and a field goal percentage of 56.3 percent (200-355). He was an intimidating force at center, who blocked 167 shots (6.0 blocks per game), including 10 blocks in a game five times this season. Malave has 884 points for his career and is the all-time City Tech leader in scoring average with 19.6 points per game, and in blocks with 241.
