Professor Charles Porter, who chairs City Tech's Department of Humanities, has been chosen as a 2002 American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) Award recipient. ASCAP has recognized Porter for his work on several previous occasions.

ASCAP Awards reflect the prestigious society's continuing commitment to assist and encourage member composers. The awards are granted by an independent panel and are based upon the unique prestige value of each writer's catalog of original compositions, as well as recent performances in areas not surveyed by the society. The awards are also the society's way of supporting the growth and development of America's musical heritage.

Porter was chosen by a panel composed of David Bowden, musical director and conductor of three Indiana orchestras (The Columbus Philharmonic, The Terre Haute Symphony and The Carmel Symphony); Peter Filichia, drama critic for the Newark Star Ledger; Carolyn Jennings, professor of music at St. Olaf College; Peter Keepnews, a freelance journalist specializing in jazz and popular culture; Michael Morgan, music director of the Oakland-East Bay Symphony Orchestra; Melinda Newman, West Coast bureau chief of Billboard; Pat Prescott, a veteran radio personality who currently hosts the morning show "The Wave" on KTWV in Los Angeles; H. Robert Reynolds, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan; and Greg Sandow, music educator, composer and classical music critic for The Wall Street Journal.
