CUNY Honors Nicolas and Porter
Porter with Beaufait at CUNY reception
Professors Tony E. Nicolas and Charles E.
Porter were recently honored for their noteworthy achievements during
the past year by The City University of New York (CUNY), at a "Salute
to Scholars" reception hosted by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein
on December 10 at the New York Public Library.
Nicolas, a member of the Physical &
Biological Sciences faculty, was recognized for receiving Minority
Access, Inc.'s National Role Model Mentor Award in 2001. His research
focuses on the synthesis of compounds that have anti-cancer, antibiotic
and anti-microbiotic properties.
Porter, chair of the humanities department,
is a composer of serious, non-commercial music. He was a winner
of the 2002 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
(ASCAP) Standard Award. The "prestige value" of Porter's
catalog of original compositions was one criteria used by the ASCAP
panel, made up of distinguished musicologists and performers, in
recognizing him.
