Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz recently helped the Supers Club of New York kick off its fall 2002 season of monthly meetings at City Tech by calling on members to show increased concern for the well-being of tenants -- particularly the elderly, the sick and disabled, abused children and battered spouses, and others in need or at risk. Superintendents also have an important part to play, Markowitz added, in helping keep their buildings off limits to those who would profit from the sale of illicit drugs.

The borough president has set up a special Borough Hall "hot line" at 718-802-3777 that supers, tenants, neighbors and other concerned individuals can call for information about the many social services designed to help these groups.

Following his remarks, Markowitz -- who from the earliest days of his career has been a strong advocate for tenants' rights and more affordable housing for the borough and city's low- and middle-income residents -- was presented with a Certificate of Honorary Membership in the Supers Club by club president Eugene Marabello of Great Neck.

Founded in 1998 by the City Tech Division of Continuing Education's Apartment House Institute, the Supers Club is the first technical society of multifamily building maintenance personnel in the greater New York area. Its membership consists primarily of supers, handypersons and porters. Other members include building owners and managers, as well as vendors serving the diverse needs of the city's apartment house industry. The club's monthly newsletter, Super! is read by more than 1,200 housing industry professionals citywide.
