Four City Tech confectionery arts students -- Joanne Gordan, Avi Mogliner, Monica Ng and Thalia Warner -- walked away with a Grand Prize of $2,500 in scholarship winnings at the New York Marriott Marquis-sponsored "Gingerbread on Broadway" competition in December. Working on their own in the pastry kitchens at City Tech and at David Emil's new Latin-theme restaurant Noche in Manhattan, the four constructed a replica of Fifth Avenue's famed Cartier Mansion. The award-winning gingerbread construction came complete with jewels in sugar-glass windows, a white chocolate limousine, decorative pearl-like wreaths, a little Betty Boop toting Cartier gift bags, and Cartier's signature building-sized ribbon. The students were in competition with other student teams from schools that included the Culinary Institute of America, the French Culinary Institute and the Institute of Culinary Education. The entries, which were judged by a panel including celebrity chef Sara Moulton, architect Larry Bogdanow and New York Marriott Marquis executive chef George McNeill, were on display in the Broadway Lounge of the Marriott Marquis during the holidays.
