City Tech Co-Sponsors Kings County DA's 7th Annual Domestic Violence Conference

New York City College of Technology recently co-sponsored the Kings County District Attorney's 7th Annual Domestic Violence Conference, "Are We Listening?" in its 1,000-seat Klitgord Center Auditorium. City Tech's human services, legal assistant studies and nursing departments worked closely with the DA's office in planning and coordinating various aspects of the daylong event.

"Domestic violence is not a topic that impacts just the home in which it happens," said City Tech President Fred W. Beaufait in welcoming remarks opening the conference. "This is an issue that impacts our society in a variety of ways."

Conference participants heard from Brooklyn DA Charles J. Hynes, Domestic Violence Bureau Chief Dierdre Bialo-Padin and Deputy Chief Roger McCready, Elder Abuse Unit Bureau Chief Arlene Markarian, New York City Medical Examiner Frede Frederic, NYU Law School Professor Holly Maguigan, NYPD Domestic Violence Unit Director Lucia Davis-Raiford, FBI Special Agent Gene Rugala, the New York City Department of Health's Dr. Susan Wilt, the Park Slope Safe Homes Project's Catherine Hodes, Psychiatrist Robert Berger, and Court TV's "Closing Arguments" anchor James Curtis.

The morning's plenary session was followed by an afternoon of breakout sessions on a variety of domestic violence topics, including "A Collaborative and Integrated Approach to Treatment," presented by City Tech Human Services Professors Vandelette Ford, Martin Garfinkle, Richard Holm, Pauline Luk, Carmen Negron, Marcia Powell and Justine Pawlukewicz. The college's Department of Nursing Professor Janine Zucker and Office of Health Education Services Coordinator Terri Clark presented at a breakout session on "Innovations in Training: The Public." Other sessions included those on "Psychiatric Defenses" and "Children as Witnesses."
