CUNY Students Recruited to Stem Poll Worker Shortage for City-wide Elections
New York City Technical College (City Tech) recently hosted a training session to prepare students from several colleges of The City University of New York (CUNY) to assist at the polls on Primary Day, September 11, and on Election Day in November.
Trainer Amelia Smith-Parker of East New York, with the assistance of Board of Elections employee Harold Williams, also of East New York, taught the students how to serve New York City voters efficiently and courteously and to report election results in an accurate and timely manner at the close of the polls.
In addition to City Tech, the colleges represented at the session included York, Medgar Evers, Kingsborough, Hunter and John Jay. More than 1,200 CUNY students were trained as poll workers this summer to help address shortages for this fall's elections, marking the largest recruitment partnership between a university and a local board of elections. The training took place on several CUNY campuses.
