City Tech's relationship with our new city government is off to a roaring start. On January 31, President Beaufait and the other CUNY presidents from Brooklyn hosted a reception for new Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and new Brooklyn members of the City Council. It was jointly sponsored by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein. The reception, held at the historic Montauk Club in Park Slope, was very well attended. Many members of the City Tech family were present to offer their congratulations to our new representatives.

Term limit legislation leads to a rapid turnover in the City Council. Twelve of the sixteen City Council members from Brooklyn are new to the council this year. So, it is more important than ever that we make sure council members understand the important role played by the City University.

President Beaufait set the tone for the meeting when he reminded the legislators that economic recovery and long-term growth of the city depend on the presence of a highly skilled workforce. "So many members of the workforce of the future are new immigrants," he said, "And CUNY offers them the best chance - for most their only chance - to acquire the skills the city needs. Though times are hard, please don't turn your back on CUNY!"

New borough President Marty Markowitz offered his assessment. "The four Brooklyn CUNY colleges are jewels," he said, as he pledged his support to CUNY. The borough president, who was accompanied by his wife Jaime, a City Tech staff member, committed himself to working with CUNY to be sure it secures the resources necessary to provide the highest level of service to the people of Brooklyn.
