Alumni Association's 1st Annual Alumni Reunion Basketball Game
More than 150 alumni and an equal number of other guests filled Klitgord Center Gymnasium bleachers to near capacity on January 29 for the City Tech Alumni Association's 1st Annual Alumni Reunion Basketball Game. Coordinated by Alumni Association President Karen Bonsignore '81, Director of Alumni Relations Helen Covington, Athletic Director Ray Amalbert '64 and Athletic Equipment Manager Anthony Alcarese '65, the event brought 50 former student athletes (from as long ago as 1959) back to campus to compete in an alumni vs. alumni game sandwiched between the women's and men's NYCTC vs. John Jay College varsity basketball games already scheduled for that date. The audience was treated to freshly popped corn and cotton candy, as well as Coca-Cola products donated by the soft drink giant. John Strickland, director of intramurals and recreation, served as reunion emcee and announcer for the games.
Following the alumni contest -- a close one decided only in the last few seconds of play -- City Tech graduates and their guests networked at a reception held in the college's Janet Lefler Dining Room. Wait staff consisted of Tanya Powell '97, Anthony Smith '96 and Juana Guichardo '97, all of whom were well acquainted with dining room routine from their former days as hospitality management students. Guests enjoyed hot and cold hors d'ouerves that included lobster mousse and chicken satay, crudite with an assortment of dips, and an international cheese board complete with flat breads and baguettes.
An exciting contest
The evening's epicurean delights were catered by Manhattan's popular Club 101 and coordinated by the club's general manager, Gilles Guillou '94, also a graduate of City Tech's hospitality management program. Michael-Towne Wines & Spirits in nearby Brooklyn Heights provided a selection of fine red and white wines for the reception. The college's Office of Image/Visual Communications produced the invitation and other promotional materials, including a giant welcoming banner. A display of both Alumni Association and college publications and other literature included information on the association's affinity MasterCard and the MetroTech BID's ValueCard, another benefit of active membership that's good for discounts at more than 50 Downtown Brooklyn stores and restaurants.
