City Tech to Honor Five at May 18 Best of New York Award Dinner

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will salute Peter Meyer, President of NYC Markets, TD Bank, Hon. Katherine Oliver, Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Theatre, Film & Broadcasting, Theatrical Teamsters, Local 817, and Garey Ellis, MD, Founder & Executive Director, Inner Force, at its 2009 Best of New York Award Dinner on May 18. City Tech graduate Leonard Maisel ’64, retired Executive Vice President of Amalgamated Bank, will be presented the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The event will be held in the Trianon Ballroom at the Hilton New York, Avenue of the Americas at 53rd Street in Manhattan. The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. Guest of Honor Reception, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. 1199SEIU President George Gresham will serve as Honorary Dinner Chair. Michael Lomonaco ’84, a City Tech graduate and Executive Chef/Managing Partner of Porter House New York, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

The theme of this year’s dinner is “Meeting the Challenge,” reflecting the programmatic and other changes the College is making in meeting the workforce development needs of business, industry and the professions in today’s shifting economic environment. Some 300 business, industry, community and union leaders, public officials, City Tech alumni, students, faculty and administrators, and other guests are expected to attend.

The largest public college of technology in the Northeast, City Tech’s mission is to provide educational access and opportunity for all New Yorkers. Its 60 degree and certificate programs in 21st century technologies have produced more than 80,000 graduates, most of which have remained in the New York metropolitan area and continue to contribute to its economic, cultural and technological vitality.     

Established in 1982, the Best of New York Award Dinner is hosted by the New York City College of Technology Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1981 to raise funds for the College. Proceeds from the annual dinner help fund foundation-sponsored scholarships and other student financial assistance and professional development programs.
