City Tech’s Culinary/Pastry/Wine Experts Star on CUNY TV’s ‘Study With The Best’

City Tech’s hospitality management program is the focus of an entire episode of the New York Emmy®-winning Study with the Best – the news magazine show about the CUNY community and its influence in the region and nation.

The show, titled CUISINE, will be presented on CUNY TV during May (schedule below) and is also available online at CUNY TV is broadcast in the tri-state region on Ch. 25.3, and is cablecast in the five boroughs of New York City on Ch. 75 and other cable channels.

The program begins at the City Tech (the New York City College of Technology) Hospitality Management Program in Brooklyn, and gets a walk-through by City Tech faculty members Susan Lifreiri-Lowry and Joanne Jacus that includes cooking demos. The segment continues with City Tech student (and soon-to-be graduate) Kristen Battaglia as she participates in the U.S. Student Pastry Competition, mentored by adjunct assistant professor and City Tech graduate Anthony Smith, who won the 2012 U.S. Pastry Competition.

Then the show moves to the Time Warner Center’s Porter House New York restaurant where Michael Lomonaco, a graduate of City Tech, is executive chef and managing partner. Lomonaco, who honed his skills at Le Cirque and 21, and ran Windows on the World at the World Trade Center, talks about life as a chef and entrepreneur in New York City.

Another City Tech graduate provides an inspirational story. Profiled is Kubee Kassaye, now a chef at the five-star Peninsula Hotel and a winner of last year’s "Les Dames D'Escoffier" Legacy Award (a mentoring program by top-level women chefs). Born in a small village in Ethiopia to a large family, Kassaye at 13 moved to New York, where she knew no English. Nevertheless she graduated from high school with honors, and Magna Cum Laude from City Tech. Inspired to become a chef by watching her birth and adopted mothers cooking, she plans to open a restaurant combining Ethiopian and Italian food. She joins chef/restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson as another Ethiopian in the New York restaurant business.

Then CUISINE profiles French-born, U.S.–raised wine connoisseur and Master Sommelier Roger Dagorn, one of only a handful of experts in the world officially designated a Sake Samurai by the Japan Sake Brewers Association. Dagorn is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Wine Education in the City Tech Hospitality Management Department.

The episode also offers a brief profile of Spoons Across America, a not-for-profit organization that teaches children and families about the benefits of healthy eating. Its board of directors includes a City Tech administrator, faculty member and alumnus. Study with the Best observes a class learning about bees and honey.
