2013 Best of New York Award Dinner to Salute ‘Women of Vision!’

The American story is replete with accounts of women whose contributions to all fields of human endeavor have ensured them a place in history. From Betsy Ross and Dolley Madison to Oprah Winfrey and Sonia Sotomayor, countless women have left a positive mark on the affairs of a nation that fewer than 100 years ago denied women the right to vote and too often held to the notion first voiced by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus that a woman’s place is in the home.

On Wednesday, May 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will salute several women of visionary accomplishment and equally visionary organizations that have distinguished themselves in the area of gender equality at the 2013 Best of New York Award Dinner at the New York Hilton. Honorees include Denise Arbesu, senior vice president, Citibank, N.A.’s Citi Commercial Bank Group/Middle Market, and chair, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce; IBM (headed by Ginni Rometty, chair, president and CEO); Paula Ingram, president, Ingram & Hebron Realty and a member of the board of directors of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership; Jewish Foundation for Education of Women; Grace Lyu-Volckhausen, president, Tiger Barron Foundation, and a Commissioner on the New York City Commission on Human Rights; and Randi Weingarten, president, American Federation of Teachers/AFL-CIO. Also to be honored with the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award is City Tech graduate Nooria Nodrat ’09, founder and president, Afghanistan Blind Women & Children Foundation.

This year’s Honorary Dinner Chair is Yvonne Riley-Tepie ’92, vice president, U.S. field marketing, TD Bank. Michael Lomonaco ’84, celebrity chef and managing partner, Porter House New York at Time Warner Center, again will serve as Dinner Chair and Master of Ceremonies.

First held in 1983, the Best of New York Award Dinner is hosted by the City Tech Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1981 to raise funds for the College. Proceeds from the annual dinner help fund foundation-sponsored scholarships and other student financial assistance and professional development programs.
