Kevin Hom Appointed Interim Dean of Technology & Design

Kevin Hom, AIA, LEED©, the founder and president of the award-winning design firm Kevin Hom & Andrew Goldman Architects, has been appointed interim dean of City Tech’s School of Technology & Design.
Mr. Hom’s distinguished professional career has spanned 37 years, including 22 at the firm bearing his name, which specializes in education facility projects throughout the nation. Under his guidance, the practice has won numerous awards, including the "2008 Firm of the Year" from the Society of American Registered Architects/New York Council. Mr. Hom is recognized as a leader in the advancement of design and better use of spaces at major colleges and universities.
“I am certain that Kevin Hom’s broad professional experience and his commitment to the educational mission of the College will serve our students and the School of Technology & Design exceptionally well,” said City Tech President Russell K. Hotzler, in announcing the appointment. “As strong as his work in architecture is, it's matched by a broad and lively interest in technology, engineering, and the arts.”
Mr. Hom received both his master’s degree in architecture and his bachelor of science degree in engineering from Columbia University. He is licensed to practice architecture in New York, New Jersey, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and the District of Columbia. He also holds National Council of Architectural Registration Board certification and is an active member of the American Institute of Architects.
His expertise focuses on designing projects that combine design achievement and programming excellence. These include academic, commercial, corporate, research, convention, hotel, theater and master planning projects. Among the numerous institutional and educational clients for which he has designed new projects and renovations are the State University of New York (SUNY), New York University, Norfolk State University, University of San Diego, Virginia State University, Colorado State University, Fashion Institute of Technology, Barnard College, Rutgers University, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and 20 New York City public schools.
Mr. Hom has worked at some of the world's most renowned design firms. He previously served as managing principal and design director at Arthur Erickson Architects in Los Angeles, director of architectural design at Gibbs & Hill in New York and project designer at the New York firms of I.M. Pei and Marcel Breuer & Associates.
He has lectured widely in the U.S. and in Canada at numerous national conferences, such as the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the Society of College University Planners (SCUP). He has also taught or lectured at Columbia, UCLA, Pratt, New York University and The CUNY Graduate Center, and has written on a wide range of topics from planning university campuses to the impact of Federal legislation on urban housing design. Additionally, he has served extensively as an architectural jurist.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the College, specifically the School of Technology & Design,” Mr. Hom says. “I plan to work with the college community to be certain that all who attend and teach here can take advantage of the great opportunities here. A partial list of the goals we will be working towards at the school are: to strengthen and improve the curriculum content, to develop new opportunities in institutional and student research, and to complete the renovation of Voorhees Hall, which houses seven of the School of Technology & Design’s nine departments.
The School of Technology & Design offers two- and four-year degrees and certificates for technologists, technicians and designers. It is home to a unique range of programs. Fields of study include graphic communications and digital media, architecture, computer-aided design, live entertainment and interactive technology, software, networking, information security and data management, electronic and power systems, optical and wireless telecommunications, robotics and automation, civil engineering and construction technologies, and environmental control systems. The school maintains active industry partnerships to keep its programs on the cutting edge and provide research/internship opportunities for students and faculty.
