POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

The New York City College of Technology, Department of Advertising Design & Graphic Arts, invites applications for a tenure-track, full time position in Graphic Arts Digital Imaging at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The department offers undergraduate instruction in two disciplines: communication design and graphic arts production management. Courses common to both programs include desktop publishing, digital imaging, vector art and digital photography. Communication design majors select one module in advertising design, graphic design, web design or digital video. Graphic Arts majors select from a range of related courses including digital imaging editing, vector art editing, applied color theory, colorant and color analysis, page assembly, impositions-plates-&-proofs, digital color presswork, digital data asset management and print-on-demand. The department provides education to prepare students for careers in all areas of graphic communications including advertising, graphic design, publishing, digital video, web design, corporate communications, packaging and commercial printing. The successful candidate will teach courses in several areas, including but not limited to basic, intermediate and advanced digital imaging and vector art courses and will play a major role in developing new digital imaging/vector art curricula and programs. Departmental duties include participation in student advisement, student activities and college-wide committees. Further responsibilities include development and oversight of professional production alliances resulting in multi-disciplinary collaborative projects with new and existing industry partners, and oversight of production schedules, budgets and student teams. Faculty members are expected to pursue creative, scholarly and professional activities at a level appropriate to advertising design and graphic arts. Teaching assignments may include day, evening and Saturday courses.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS



Terminal master’s degree or equivalent terminal degree in a field related to graphic communications, and significant professional experience in graphic communications-based management in one or more areas of the graphics industry. The preferred candidate will have working knowledge of prepress, presswork, post press, Six Sigma methodology, and digital asset management. Must be computer literate on multiple operating systems. Experience with grant applications and industry support for educational initiatives is also desirable. University level teaching experience and five years experience in a graphic arts production management job is also preferred. Excellent communication skills are required. Candidates should provide a portfolio of professional activity.
